Campion Road, Putney, London
Campion Road is a residential street in Putney, which runs between Howards Lane and Hazlewood Road, and is situated in the London Borough of Wandsworth.
Archive maps indicate that Campion Road, and the surrounding area, was originally wooded fields and was likely built upon in the early 1900s.
11 Campion Road
John Silvester Hitchcock (uncle of film director Alfred Hitchcock) purchased 11 Campion Road in 1920, around the time he formed the John Hitchcock Ltd company, and lived there with his wife Sophia until his death in 1949.
The 1911 Census lists Walter John Channon (aged 46), a head clerk at the East India Company, living at the address with his family and a servant.
The large house became a focal point for the extended Hitchcock family and is described by biographer Patrick McGilligan:
John Silvester retired in the mid-1930s and his driver placed the following advert in The Times (14/Dec/1935), which was repeated two days later:
As stipulated in his Last Will and Testament, the property was sold following John Silvester's death in 1949.
The property was sold in December 2005 for £1,150,000.
On this map from 1951, number 11 is shaded red and the garden coloured green.
