Ray Milland dies of cancer at 78

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) — Ray Milland, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of an alcoholic in Lost Weekend, died yesterday of cancer. He was 78.

Mr. Milland, who died at Torrance Memorial Medical Centre, had suffered from cancer for several months, said his agent, Ronnie Leif.

Mr. Milland portrayed an alcoholic writer opposite Jane Wyman in 1945's Lost Weekend.

In 1954, he teamed with Grace Kelly in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Dial M For Murder. More recently, he played Ryan O'Neal's father in the 1970 movie Love Story, and its sequel, Oliver's Story, in 1978. 'A wonderful man'

Born Jan. 3, 1908, as Reginald Truscott-Jones in Neath, Wales, the son of a steel mill superintendent, Mr. Milland starred in about 60 movies.

Mr. Milland and his wife, Muriel, had visited London in December before he was aware of his illness, Leif said.

"He was a wonderful man, one of those people who doesn't talk about show business because his life was so full and he knew so many people," said Leif, Milland's agent since 1971. Cremated at sea

Mr. Milland is survived by his wife, a daughter and two grandchildren, Leif said.

The actor's body was to be cremated and the ashes scattered at sea.

No services were planned, the agent said.
