Hitchcock's Films

The Paradine Case (1947)

About 38 minutes into the film, Anthony Keane (Gregory Peck) travels north by train to Cumbria to visit Hindley Hall.

Hitchcock's cameo

After an initial establishing shot of Rydal Water and then the Cumbrian countryside with a distant steam training putting into a rural station — in fact, Coniston Railway Station[1] — we see Keane disembarking and walking towards the booking hall exit. This was filmed at Braithwaite Station by a second unit team with a double standing in for Gregory Peck.[2]

Keane is then shown exiting the station on a set built on the studio sound stages back in America and it is here that Hitchcock makes his cameo appearance, carrying a cello case. Keane then walks on and checks into the Station Hotel.

According to author Gary Giblin, Hitchcock had scouted for filming locations in Cumbria during May 1946 with unit manager Fred Ahern.
