Under Capricorn

Even the best of directors and most talented of casts cannot make a good film out of bad material, and "Under Capricorn" (Regal) is such bad material that Alfred Hitchcock, the master director, and his all-star team fail to make good entertainment out of it.

The film, which is in beautiful Technicolor, tells the story of a neurotic household in Sydney about a century ago.

Ingrid Bergman plays an Irish aristocrat, married to her former groom (Joseph Cotten). She becomes a dipsomaniac, but is brought back to sanity by a friend of her girlhood, portrayed by Michael Wilding, who falls in love with her.

At the instigation of her wicked maid, Milly (Margaret Leighton), she resumes her drinking habits, but after many complications, all ends well.

There is good acting by the principals, but their talents are wasted on such poor material.
