Point Lobos, California

Hitchcock's Films

Rebecca (1940)

At the time of filming, strict environmental restrictions were in place in the Point Lobos area with a "ban on all filming at the park, except for shooting background footage with a strictly limited presence of cast, crew and equipment". Controversially, the crew removed large amounts of the undergrowth and damaged some young Cypress trees during filming. Local residents felt poetic justice was served when many of the crew were hospitalised after having contracted poison ivy.[1]

Point Lobos State Reserve

The atmospheric opening titles were filmed in Point Lobos State Reserve.[2]

Point Lobos Coastline

Many of the coastal scenes in Rebecca were filmed at various locations in Point Lobos, with doubles standing in for Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier.

Gibson Beach

Gibson Beach was used as the location of the beach with the wooden staircase.
