Louise Road, Stratford, London

(Redirected from Louise Road)

Louise Road is a residential street in Stratford, built sometime around the 1880s.

Period maps from the 1860s show much of the area was open fields. Within a few years, an extensive house-building programme in the town allowed the population to expand, partly driven by the influx of workers at the newly-opened Stratford Railway Works.

13 Louise Road

Following her marriage to office porter John Howe in 1881, Mary Hitchcock (aunt of film director Alfred Hitchcock) lived at 13 Louise Road and they are listed there at the time of the 1891 Census. By 1901, the family had moved to Delahay Street in Westminster.

29 Louise Road

By the time of the 1891 Census, William Hitchcock had moved his family to 29 Louise Road, where their daughter Ellen Kathleen Hitchcock was born in September 1892. The Census also implies that they also shared the house with another family — Arthur and Margaret Ridgewell, and their son Arthur.

The family then moved to 517 Leytonstone High Road at some point during the mid-1890s.
