St. Paul's, Covent Garden Market, London

(Redirected from St. Paul's Church)

St Paul's Church, also commonly known as the Actors' Church, is a church designed by Inigo Jones as part of a commission by Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford, in 1631 to create "houses and buildings fitt for the habitacons of Gentlemen and men of ability" in Covent Garden, London.

As well as being the parish church of Covent Garden, the church gained its nickname by a long association with the theatre community.

In George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, the first act is set on the steps of St. Paul's and is where the flower-selling Eliza Doolittle first meets Henry Higgins

Hitchcock's Films

Frenzy (1972)

According to Gary Giblin, Hitchcock was extremely keen to include the church in Frenzy and it makes two appearances. Firstly, in the left-hand side of the frame in a shot of the market, the morning after Babs' murder. Secondly, following the arrest of Richard Blaney, a policeman thanks Bob Rusk on the steps of the church.[1]
