MYSTERY DEPT.: Alfred Hitchcock, the thriller director, recently arrived in Rome. He was asked if he had any ideas for a movie to be filmed in that city. Hitchcock replied that he'd thought of a good opening scene for a murder mystery film: It would show the white marble Victor Emanuel monument. The camera would close up to it — closer, closer to the white marble — and finally rest on one discolored spot, a red bloodstain.
