Alfred Hitchcock's next for Universal Pictures is "The Short Night" based on a Ronald Kirkbridge novel of the same title, which in turn is based on Sean Bourke's non-fiction work, "The Springing of George Blake." Pic will be Hitchcock's 54th film, the first since "Family Plot."

U says film rights to both book have been acquired for "Night." The Bourke work, which will be the springboard for the film's opening scenes, recounts a true saga of an escape of a notorious espionage agent.

"The Short Night" will be a love tale with action-suspense.
