Nova Pilbeam

"Young and Innocent" stars Nova Pilbeam, who not so long ago made a name for herself as a child star. Now she is grown up, and she fulfils her early promise as an actress, though one wishes she had been given a better opportunity than is offered by this film. The story, about a hunt for a supposed murderer who is aided in his escape by a chief constable's daughter, is slow and uneventful. It meanders on until the last reel, when it grips for a moment or two, but the lack of surprise and the pointless detail are against it.

Alfred Hitchcock, who directed it, is a master of certain types of story, but there is so little to tell in this one that even he has not been able to infuse much vitality into it.
