Bartholomew the Strangler
Bartholomew the Strangler is a fictitious film referenced in Sabotage (1936).
The bomb which kills Mrs. Verloc's younger brother Stevie is hidden in a film canister marked "Bartholomew the Strangler".
According to a mocked-up film poster which appears in Sabotage, the film stars actor "Tom McGurth". The Irish surname "McGurth" appears to have been chosen due to its rarity, although it is worth noting that a labourer named Hugh McGurth was sentenced to 20 years' penal servitude in 1882 at Durham Assizes for the murder of Mary O'Conner.[1] McGurth had been a member of the Fenian Brotherhood and had previously appeared in court in 1874 after being attacked in the Rose and Crown public house, Blackhill, Newcastle.[2]
