Q. Who was the photographer for Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller "The Birds"? — T.C., Boston
A. The credit goes to nature photographer Alfred Milotte. Milotte and his wife, Elma, once operated a photo studio in Ketchikan, Alaska, and spent two years traveling and filming the wilderness along the route of what was to become the Alaska Highway. Milotte's footage attracted the attention of Walt Disney, who hired him for the Academy Award-winning movie "Seal Islands," shot in 1946 in Alaska's Pribilof chain. The couple later did extensive filming on the Australian mainland and in Tasmania, followed by three years in Africa. Currently living in Seattle, the Milottes have completed a book about an Alaskan grizzly bear and her cubs. It's titled "Toklat" and is published by Alaska Northwest Publishing Co., Edmonds, Wash.
