First, some numbers: Alfred Hitchcock directed 54 feature-length movies, of which (this book observes) "21 were based on previously published or produced works." Second, some names: Joseph Conrad, Daphne du Maurier, John Steinbeck, Sean O'Casey, Somerset Maugham, and various more obscure writers (Charles Bennett, Eliot Stannard, Patrick McGilligan, John Buchan, Patricia Highsmith, Cornell Woolrich).
