Abstract

Shaw cites the politico-industrial context of filmmaking in Britain between 1917 and 1939 with emphasis on the strong inter-relationship that existed between film artists, the censors, and government. The author also discusses the role-played in films by the British armed forces and the intelligence services, both on and behind the screen, to examine the links between militarism and anti-communism during the formative stage of the East-West cultural Cold War.
