Hitchcock Chronology: 1900s
Sometime around 1907, the Hitchcock family moves from Leytonstone to a fishmongery at 175 Salmon Lane, Limehouse, Stepney, London E14. William Hitchcock also takes over a fish frying shop at 130 Salmon Lane, running both shops until his death in 1914.
1904
- William Hitchcock appears listed in the London Telephone Directory for the first time, as a greengrocer living at 517 Leytonstone High Road, and contactable on telephone number Wanstead 569.[1]
1905
July
- The Strand magazine publishes an article about the Limehouse district of London, describing Salmon Lane as the "great market street of the district, which is densely packed from end to end with a Saturday marketing crowd. Here are soldiers and sailors in plenty, a few Lascars and Chinamen, Irish hawkers, and a sprinkling of foreign Jews."[2]
1906
- The July 1906 London Telephone Directory is the final time William Hitchcock and family are listed as living at 517 Leytonstone High Road.[3]
December
- 1st - The first electric tram service runs through Leytonstone.[4]
1907
- It is likely the Hitchcocks moved from 517 Leytonstone High Road to 175 Salmon Lane during 1907.
1908
- The July 1908 London Telephone Directory lists the Hitchcock family as now residing at 175 Salmon Lane, Limehouse, and contactable on telephone number East 3332.[5]
- In later years, Hitchcock would recall seeing A Ride on a Runaway Train (produced by Lyman H. Howe) during the summer of 1908 at the local picture palace cinema.[6]
