- The Hitchcocks celebrate their daughter Patricia's high school graduation with a lavish party at their Bellagio Road house. Among the guests are Alida Valli, Whitfield Cook, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Arthur Laurents, Farley Granger, Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.[1]

January
- 22nd - Principal photography begins on Rope, Hitchcock's first film for Transatlantic Pictures, starring James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger. Although filming is completed within 8 days, Hitchcock is unhappy with the studio sunset and decides to reshoot the final 5 reels of the film, which takes a further 9 days.[2]
December
- 31st - Whitfield Cook hosts a lavish New Year's Eve party in Hollywood. Among the many guests are the Hitchcocks, Sally Benson, Farley Granger, Arthur Laurents, Charlie Chaplin, Shelley Winters and director Joseph Losey.[3]

- 27th - Actor Farley Granger, who starred in Rope and Strangers on a Train, dies aged 85.
