    • MEPO 21/16/5608 — Retirement from Metropolitan Police: John Whelan (1881-84)
  • Not to be confused with:
    • John Whelan (b. ~1833), married to Emma (b. ~1848) with a daughter Emma (b. ~1867), who worked as a house painter and lived in Middlesex
    • John Whelan (b. ~1833) from Ireland, married to Emma (b. ~1839), who worked as an iron foundry labourer and lived in Derby
    • John Whelan (b. ~1841) from Clifton, Galway, Ireland, married circa 1868 to Mary Ann (b. ~1845) née Stewart? from Trandragee, Armagh, who lived in West Ham district. His occupation "constable ...? dock" (1881 Census), "dock constable" (1891 Census), "customs watcher" (1901 Census) and "army pensioner" (1911 Census). They had 3 children, but 2 had died by 1911. He was likely the John Whelan who died 1913 in West Ham.[24]
  • It is worth noting that his first marriage was not a Roman Catholic service, so he may not have been a strict Catholic.
