Rudolph Maté

Biography

Rudolph Maté, A.S.C., born Rudolf Mayer (1898–1964), was a Polish-born cinematographer and film director.

Maté initially worked in Europe, most prominently on Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Vampyr (1932), before moving to Hollywood in the mid 1930s.

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography 5 years in a row, beginning with Foreign Correspondent (1940).

He died from a heart attack in October 1964, aged 66.
