The Hitchcocks of Dedham

This page attempts to document entries in the standard genealogical archives relating to persons named "Hitchcock" with a link to the village of Dedham in Essex, which is where Alfred Hitchcock's great grandfather Charles Hitchcock (b. ~1791) was born. It appears Hitchcock's ancestors had been settled in Dedham for nearly 200 years — the earliest known ancestors is Adam Hitchcock, who was probably born in Dedham in the early 1600s.

Charles later married Sarah and they moved 60 miles southwest to the district of West Ham (which later became part of East London) where they started a small greengrocery and fishmongery in the town of Stratford. Daughters Susannah, Emma and Sarah were his only children who born in Dedham, which dates the family move to Stratford as being sometime around 1824.

The following are listed in approximate chronological order. It is worth noting that many of the Dedham Hitchcocks of Charles' generation were coopers, i.e. barrel makers, and there are no obvious links to the greengrocery or fishmongery trades.

Historically, Dedham was one of the northern-most districts in Essex, on the boundary with Sudbury and Sussex. The following are the neighbouring and nearby districts:

  • Essex — Ardleigh, Boxted, Elmstead, Great Bromley, Langham, Lawford, Little Bromley, Manningtree, Mistley, and St. Michael Mile End
  • Sudbury — Stoke Nayland
  • Sussex — Bentley, Brantham, East Bergholt, Higham (aka Higham by Nayland), Holton St. Mary, and Stratford St. Mary,

The parish records of St. Mary the Virgin have been digitised and are available via Essex Record Office's SEAX online archives.

  66. Jane, the wife of William Hitchcock (b. 1849), was also born around 1953 in East Bergholt, Sussex, so they were possibly related in some way

  85. Ellen first appears listed as a granddaughter of James & Sarah Groves in the 1881 Census, although neither of their daughters were married at the time.
