EDITH HEAD

Edith Head, the Hollywood dress designer who won eight Academy Awards and was always credited with being responsible for putting Dorothy Lamour in a sarong, died in Los Angeles on October 24. She was 73. Miss Head designed costumes for countless films and for such stars as Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman and Marilyn Monroe.

Her eight Oscars — more than any other costume designer — were for her work in The Heiress; All About Eve; Samson and Delilah; A Place in the Sun; Roman Holiday; Sabrina; The Facts of Life and The Sting.

She had become a sketch artist at Paramount Studios in the 1920s and her first break came when she designed clothes for Mae West in the film She Done Him Wrong in 1933.
