Film and TV star known for role on 'Tatort'

German actor Hansjoerg Felmy, who worked in films and TV, died Aug. 27 in Bavaria after long illness. He was 76.

Felmy left a lasting mark as Kommissar Haferkamp, one of the many investigators that have taken turn in high-profile TV detective series "Tatort."

Felmy was born in Berlin and started stage acting after the war. He landed a lead role in drama "Sharks and Small Fish" in 1953 and appeared in a 1959 adaptation of Thomas Mann novel "Buddenbrooks" and Alfred Hitchcock's cold war thriller "The Iron Curtain."†

After appearing in some 30 films, he concentrated on theater, and eventually became a well-known actor on TV. In 1974, he started as Kommissar Haferkamp in "Tatort," the detective series which has been running since 1971. Haferkamp, a melancholic Joe Average struggling with a dysfunctional private life, became one of the most popular "Tatort" figures in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Felmy appeared in various TV productions until 1995, when he withdrew from regular acting work, impaired by osteoporosis.

He is survived by his second wife, actress Claudia Wedekind, and a son.
