Overview

Bates Motel is an American drama television series produced by Universal Television for A&E.

The series is a "contemporary prequel" to the film Psycho (1960) and depicts the life of Norman Bates and his mother Norma prior to the events portrayed in Hitchcock's film. The series is set in the fictional White Pine Bay, Oregon, as opposed to the film's Fairvale, California.

The series was renewed for a third season in April 2014.

A previous unrelated attempt by Universal Television at creating a series based around the motel was made in 1987, when a pilot episode — also titled Bates Motel — was directed by Richard Rothstein and starred Bud Cort.
