John Anderson, character actor in 'Psycho,' dies

John Anderson, the tall, craggy-faced character actor who played a snooping used car salesman in Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and appeared on Broadway and television, died Friday of a heart attack. He was 69.

Anderson, who earned a master's degree in drama from the University of Iowa, began his acting career on the Mississippi River showboat Goldenrod.

He later moved to New York, where he appeared in both off-Broadway and Broadway productions, including the Broadway show "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

He appeared in more than 500 television roles, including frequent 1960s appearances on "The Twilight Zone." Other credits included a recurring role as the grandfather of television's "MacGyver."

In addition to "Psycho," he appeared in such movies as "Smokey and the Bandit II," "Ride the High Country" and "Cotton Comes to Harlem."

In recent weeks, he was preparing for the Broadway production of "In the Sweet By and By."
