July

  • 19th - After being delayed by a technician's strike, principal photography begins on the second Transatlantic Pictures film, Under Capricorn, starring Michael Wilding, Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten.[3]

September

  • 6th - Alma Reville arrives into New York from London aboard Pan Am flight 3/31. She then checked into the St. Regis Hotel in New York before traveling back to the family home in Bel-Air. Her husband remains in England to finish production on Under Capricorn. Their daughter Patricia stays in London with her maiden aunts Mary and Teresa, getting ready to start at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.[4]

October

  • Principal photography on Under Capricorn is completed in October and Hitchcock flies back to Hollywood, having spent over 6 months in England.[5]

1949

September

  • Under Capricorn opens at the Radio City Music Hall, New York City, to mostly negative reviews. Ingrid Bergman's "scandalous" affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini creates negative press for the film, causing some US exhibitors to avoid booking the film. Angered by the press, Bergman refuses to do any publicity for the film.[6]

  • 23rd - Actor Michael Wilding, who starred in Under Capricorn and Stage Fright, dies aged 66.

  • 29th - Actress Ingrid Bergman, who starred in Spellbound, Notorious and Under Capricorn, dies aged 67.

  • 6th - Sound recordist Peter Handford, who worked with Hitchcock on Under Capricorn and Frenzy, dies aged 88.
