Ann Hitchcock (b. ~1827) née Mahoney

(Redirected from Ann Mahoney)

Ann Mahoney, the daughter of Irish-born Catholics Sylvester and Eleanor Mahoney, married Joseph Hitchcock in 1851. They had nine known children.

At the time of the marriage, it would seem the Mahoney family were paupers and the 1851 Census lists Ann as a street hawker. Ann was likely illiterate and was unable to sign her name on her marriage certificate.

She died in 1881 aged 54.

Research Notes

  • It is unclear what happened to Ann's siblings.
  • The 1841 Census states Ann was not born in West Ham district, whilst 1871 & 1881 Census state born in Stratford.
  • On their marriage certification (1851), Joseph's profession is given as "General Dealer".
  • Despite Ann Mahoney apparently being Catholic, the marriage was a Church of England Anglican ceremony ("according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, after banns").[33]
  • Donald Spoto states the witnesses to the marriage — Cornelius and Michael — were brothers but this seems to be an assumption rather than a known fact. There were several families with a similar surname (Queenland/Quinland/Quinlan) living in Stratford at that time. In 1851, Cornelius was living with his parents but working as a fruit seller and Michael was living on Maryland Point, which was where Joseph was living at the time.
  • No 1861 Census entry found, although son Charles Joseph is living with Ann's mother.
