I’ve just spotted that Elephant Films are releasing a batch of Hitchcock Blu-rays in France during October, including the British Film Institute’s recent restorations of Easy Virtue (Le Passé ne Meurt Pas), Downhill (C’est la Vie) and The Lodger (Les Cheveux d’Or). I’m pleased to announce that Network UK are releasing Hitchcock’s underrated 1937 film Young and Innocent on Bluray in January 2015! According to the early information on the Network site, the extras will be taken from the previous DVD release and include an introduction by Charles Barr and the venerable Hitchcock: The Early Years documentary, which has been popping up on DVDs since 2001. Previously only available as a bootleg transfer taken from a UK TV broadcast, Elstree Calling (1930) is being released for the first time on DVD by Network at the end of April. Although Hitchcock’s exact contribution to the film is unknown, James M. Vest speculated in “Alfred Hitchcock’s Role in ‘Elstree Calling’” that it may amount up to a quarter of the film. It’s been rumoured for a while now that “North by Northwest” will be getting a Blu-ray release this year, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film. It’s beginning to look like the new MGM “Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection” 8 DVD set might be a victim of poor quality DVD manufacturing. The packaging, lovely though it is, is a poor design for keeping the DVDs in pristine condition — the rigid cardboard sleeves can easily scuff the playing surface of the DVDs…. So far, two out of three of the new Hitchcock “Legacy” 2 DVD sets have arrived on my doorstep — Psycho and Vertigo. I’ve analysed both transfers and compared them to the previous US Masterpiece Collection. Although Gary at DVD Beaver talks about the new Vertigo transfer being a slight improvement over the 2005 transfer, it’s very much in the eye of the beholder.
